The key to successful automation is using it wisely

Who doesn’t want to do things faster, more safely and more efficiently?

Humans are great at many things and have over the years developed many useful skills, however it’s widely accepted that they are at risk of making errors, can only work for a certain number of hours at a time and are not always the best at learning on the job. This doesn’t make them the best candidates for all roles. Automating some business functions, particularly repetitive tasks, not only alleviates some of the concerns associated with human working practices, but can also increase efficiency, improve testing effectiveness and even make for a better customer experience.

This is not a debate about replacing humans with automation or robots. The focus here is on how automation can, for some tasks, significantly cut costs, improve performance, and at the same time, free up humans to add value in other areas of the business.

End-to-end automation can cut testing time by 97%

At Brickendon, we have seen the benefits of investing in automation first hand. In our experience, a full end-to-end regression testing cycle of a medium-sized application traditionally takes six working weeks. Automating this process can reduce it to as little as six hours – a 97 per cent reduction. That is basically a saving of 29 working days, meaning that those individuals are now free to carry out other tasks and add value to the business in other areas.
Similarly, the manual process of resolving software development issues is traditionally between six-seven hours. Automating this process reduces the action to less than 15 minutes – that’s a 96 per cent reduction. This doesn’t mean however that the role of the individuals who originally carried out these tasks is redundant. It has simply changed.

Enhancing the process to provide the best customer experience

We at Brickendon are of the firm opinion that the future of automation lies in collaboration. Automation, whether it’s in a support or development capacity, will always need to be programmed. This will require highly-skilled developers and software engineers to ensure the technology functions as required. Machine learning has come a long way over the past decade, but there is still a long way to go before robots can continually learn from their mistakes and correct their actions based on what has gone before.

The world is continually changing, and we are constantly exploring new ways to enhance the delivery and operational process. We do this internally for our digital product development and externally for our clients as they look to improve the service they offer their customers.

Within one of our own businesses we have reduced operational costs by 80 per cent, significantly reduced operational risk and increased business intelligence by implementing our own chatbot. And that’s not all, it has also enabled us to provide the best end-to-end customer experience.end-to-end customer experience.
